Over 100 years in the future, authors still face the same struggles. Two years after his son is born, Andy Kingston gives up his writing dream and takes drastic action to support his family he lies to his wife and arranges an interview for a government job. When he is kidnapped and then held in a baffling prison environment, he'll do anything and everything necessary to escape and return home. But Andy will face choices no man -- and no author -- should ever have to make.

An introspective thriller set in a dystopian future, this story is for readers and authors alike. If you have ever loved books, loved writing or loved your family, it will prompt the question What would you do if the Author Collector took you?

The Author Collector The Once and Future Author Part One eBook Teddi Deppner

Here is my favorite paragraph: "The sun rises and pierces us with its beauty, and we write. A misprogrammed drone kills our best friend and his girl, and we write. A flower blooms, a display screen cracks, we trip over our cat, and we write."

Deppner, Teddi (2015-03-27). The Author Collector (Kindle Locations 383-384). . Kindle Edition.

This short story (novella? I'm not sure about the page number rules) gets an A for worldbuilding. The story is "dreamlike in quality" if it's Chekhov doing the dreaming, and I felt completely satisfied by the...well. If I tell you I'll completely give it away. But okay, so there's this choice the main character has to make and you're like, "I half wish he'd just go ahead and do X" and then HE DOES X which is AWESOME because in books the main character NEVER does X. Sorry if that's vague, but I really, really liked that the "important choice" drama was flipped on its head. At first I was thrown by the dialogue the MC had with his family--it seemed insincere, but then I decided it was part of the worldbuilding, that that is how people talk to each other in this world. And usually I complain that a self-published novel isn't long enough or descriptive enough, but this was very nicely balanced for the kind of writing it is----it doesn't follow a traditional structure, it kind of makes one up as it goes along and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it---not because it has a lack, but because I'm usually a three act structure kind of woman. Blurry edges, the push and pull of wondering what's going to happen next and why. Definitely worth the price of admission.

The Author Collector The Once and Future Author Part One eBook Teddi Deppner Reviews

Wow! I am impressed Teddi as I could not put my down! Funny part was I did not 'get' the title until the ending! Getting slow in my old age. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see more from you!
I read a lot and lately I often find myself bored. Not with this book. This book took me back to some of the classics I'd read in college. Simply an smart read!!
The Author Collector engaged me from the first page. It's a thought provoking, and beautifully written story.
This is an excellent little sci fi metafiction. It's a good advertisement for (hopefully) future work, as it is a good glimpse into Teddi Deppner's style. The author is a very good writer. I have high hopes that if and when she publishes a novel, it, too, will be excellent. A longer work of this quality would probably rate 5 stars.
The Author Collector grabs your attention immediately and the writing style has a nice flow that makes it a pleasure to read. I thought I had the mystery figured out... I love it when a plot takes an unexpected turn and I find myself pleasantly surprised. Our protagonist, although initially faltering, eventually arrives at what I would consider to be the "right" decision. But then the author turns it all sideways leaving us wondering if the course of action was the right one after all...
I enjoyed this short story. The world Teddi created is something I would like to see explored more, especially reasons that the children came to be treated as they are. I see a lot of potential in that story and the rest of the world building. The main character and his inner dialog was fascinating to listen in on as he tried to explain to himself why he was doing the things he was doing.

The only reason that I can't give this 5 stars (I would like to give 4.5) is that the ending felt very abrupt. I think that it would have done with a couple of more pages to bring the story to a close.
I love really thought-provoking short stories. Bonus points if there's a creep factor. Think Ray Bradbury or "The Lottery. Teddi Deppner's The Author Collector doesn't disappoint.
Andy is an author, a not terribly successful one. He has a wife and young son he needs to support. Knowing that being a writer isn't going to cut it if he and his family are going to enjoy a good life, Andy decides to interview for a government job, a position with good pay. In a world where the freedom to explore is curtailed, Andy takes advantage of this privilege, and tours the city before his interview. While on his excursion he's abducted and finds himself in prison. Andy's basic needs are provided for, and he learns his fellow inmates are also authors who offer up advice for Andy's predicament.
The Author Collector is a short story, so I don't want to give too much away. But as with any good short story, there's as much theme as there is plot. This particular quote is really powerful and hints at the theme.
"Writing should always spring from the wells of the heart. The deeper you reach for something, the more powerful it is. Whether it comes from deep pain or deep hope, it has to be something that moves you first for it to move others."
Here is my favorite paragraph "The sun rises and pierces us with its beauty, and we write. A misprogrammed drone kills our best friend and his girl, and we write. A flower blooms, a display screen cracks, we trip over our cat, and we write."
